I'm old enough to remember George Wallace, the segregationist (and frankly, blatantly racist) Democratic governor of Alabama in the early 1960s, who defiantly opposed the admission of blacks to Alabama's university system until President Kennedy forced the issue. Well, Wallace went on eventually to have a change of heart, and, I suspect, it was a sincere one, though his legacy remains tainted by his earlier stances against the civil rights movement.
