It seems that "cold fusion" is back, this time in mainstream science. Or at least, it is sort of back, but not really. The article is here, and I share it because it contains a lot of hidden lessons, for virtually everyone with an interest in science, from amateurs to "academics": Big Idea Bring Back the "Cold Fusion" Dream I like this article for several reasons, because of the lessons it contains for all an sundry interested in science. Stanley Pons and Martin Fleischmann did indeed perform an experiment in which they observed some anomalous production of heat, returning more energy … [Read more...]
FUSION REACTION ENGINE…WHERE MIGHT WE HAVE HEARD THIS BEFORE?
Here is an interesting development that quite a few of you shared with me: NASA's development of a pinched plasma fusion engine: Engine in development could cut Mars travel time to three months The reasoning behind the development is indicated by the title of the article itself: such an engine would cut travel time to our nearest most interesting celestial neighbor, Mars, by better than a half, thus also tremendously reducing the engineering problems of sustaining a human crew for a journey that could take 16-18 months using currently available technologies. But I want to draw your … [Read more...]
THEY JUST CAN’T SEEM TO GET LITHIUM-7 RIGHT…
Well, this one jumped out at me over at phys.org, but first, before we get to that, a little review. For those of you who've read Grid of the Gods or The Nazi International, you'll already know the lithium-7 problem, so a brief review for those who don't. Lithium-7 is, for me at least, at the center of a bit of an historical mystery. In the early 1950s, the US military tested one of its newly acquired toys - the hydrogen bomb - at a test in the South Pacific. The particular test I have in mind was of a bomb code-named "Castle Bravo", and this quickly became one of the most infamous cases of … [Read more...]
ROSSI’S E-CAT COLD FUSION EQUIPMENT SURPASSES 900 HOURS OF CONTINUOUS OPERATION
I well remember laughing quietly to myself the first time I saw Michael Fox and Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future. At the end of the movie, Lloyd shows up in a modified DeLorian....modified with a "Mr. Fusion" sort of coffee-maker looking apparatus stuck to the engine, into which he puts a bunch of garbage: banana peels, food, old paper, and so on, and off the DeLorian goes. In those years, of course, Pons and Fleischmann were being laughed out of the US - and pretty much out of the world of mainstream science - for their claims of having observed nuclear reactions at temperatures far … [Read more...]
GERMANY GOES NON-NUCLEAR?
I ran across this interesting article and it really needs to be shared, and commented upon here, for it raises so many issues of an historical and geopolitical nature: Germany Hits Record In Solar Power With 50% Of Energy During Mid-Day Hours This article prompts so many questions and observations I don't really know where to begin, but let's begin with an assumption, and a little history. First, the assumption: let's assume the article is true (and there's really no reason to assume otherwise, until later, as we shall see), and that Germany does indeed receive half of its energy … [Read more...]
NEWS AND VIEWS FROM THE NEFARIUM MAY 13, 2011
Joseph talks about The Grid of the Gods, makes a correction to a publisher's error, and then moves on to discuss the anniversary of Dr. Eugene Mallove's death May 14, 2004. … [Read more...]
THINGS THAT MAKE YOU SAY “HMMM!”: FUSION, BORON, AND RICHTER AGAIN
Sometimes ya just gotta love it. While browsing the internet this week for interesting news, I came across this item about scientists trying to make controlled fusion work as a source of electrical energy: Overturned Scientific Explanation may be good news for nuclear fusion What I really loved about this was that the original 1936 findings of British physicists was in part re-affirmed, but that boron played a role in the contemporary scientists' thinking about nuclear fusion. Well, it played a role in the fusion thinking of none other than Dr. Ronald Richter, too. You remember him? … [Read more...]
COLD FUSION: HERE WE GO AGAIN
Well, here we go again with the cold fusion story. Before I post the link, let's review the normal steps for the reporting of cold fusion, the "script" as it were, by which such claims are "handled" by the media and the scientific junta responding to such claims: (1) a claim for cold fusion at less than the extraordinarily high temperatures of normal fusion (such as in stars) is made by off-the-reservation scientists (we'll call them "pseudo-scientists", the scientific magisterium's word for "infidel") working with relatively simple equipment, causing alchemical-like fusion transmutations … [Read more...]
