JAPAN AND USA SIGN AGREEMENT TO MONITOR SPACE DEBRIS… OR WAS THAT SPACE SHIPS?

Now, this is a really weird one folks, because one might read it as being due merely to a fluke of translation, or one might read it as a deliberate "slip" on the part of whoever translated this from Chinese to English. But in either case, the story is rather significant: Japan, U.S. agree to monitor ships from space Now, let's take the more obvious interpretation first, namely, that the translation is simply poor, and that all the USA and Japan are agreeing to do is pool their satellite space-debris monitoring resources to monitor "space debris." We're told that this agreement is … [Read more...]

TRANSHUMANISM, ANAMNETIC TECHNOLOGIES, AND OAK RIDGE’S TITAN SUPERCOMPUTER

There's a super-computing race on folks, between the USA, Japan, and Germany, and, for the moment, so far as we know, the USA is ahead (which isn't saying much, since we don't really know what the Chinese or Russians may be up to). Now, before I share this article which was sent to me by many of you (this particular example being from Facebook friend Mr. P.T.), as you read this, I want you to bear in mind all those transhumanist articles I have been blogging lately, and particularly, the idea of anamnetic technologies: Oak Ridge’s Titan named world’s fastest computer I suggested in … [Read more...]

ON SPECIAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH ISRAEL

During the past months I've been commenting about the geopolitical realignment taking place in the world, but there is one stable feature throughout all this transition, and it is the "special relationship" that supposedly obtains between the US and Israel. After all(we're reminded time and time again), the USA is allied to the only real democracy in the Middle East, right? (On that basis, why don't we have better relations with the world's largest democracy, India? but that's an inconvenient question). This article was sent to me by a friend, and in reading it, I have to say, it echoes my … [Read more...]

NOT SO MYSTERIOUS DEATHS OF IRANIAN SCIENTISTS

The recent assasination of a young Iranian scientist, allegedly involved in that nation's nuclear program, has been only the tip of a nasty iceberg. The Daily Telegraph in the UK - or as my friends and I from my Oxford days used to call it, The Daily Torygraph - has run an interesting article compiling list of names of dead or missing Iranian scientists since 2007: Iran nuclear scientist dead: mysterious recent deaths and disappearances According to the Telegraph article, a total of five Iranian scientists are dead as the result of deliberate murder. In a previous blog, I raised the … [Read more...]

USA SEEKS “NEW RULES” IN SPACE

chinese

I ran across this interesting article about US worries over China's ventures into space: Worried on China, US seeks rules in space As I read it, I wondered if the worries about China's anti-satellite capabilities were really the source of the worry. I mean, let's face it, with only Russia and China having such capabilities - more about that in a moment - is this really the concern here? Or is it something else? Well, for one, I don't for a moment believe that these three nations are the only ones with such capabilities. France, the UK, Germany, Italy, Japan, India, Brazil... basically … [Read more...]
