HUMAN EMBRYOS “EDITED” IN CHINA

It has finally happened: human embryos have been genetically modified in China, by utilizing the CRISPR technique of genetic modification. Indeed, while the development is not surprising, as one might imagine, I have a few high octane speculations about it(and I would also like to thank all the readers here who sent me these two stories):

Engineering the Perfect Baby

Chinese scientists genetically modify human embryos

Frankly, I found the second article so disturbing that it is difficult for me to write about, particularly in connection with my habit of high octane speculation. Nonetheless, I want to draw your attention to the following paragraphs from the second article:

The technique used by Huang’s team involves injecting embryos with the enzyme complex CRISPR/Cas9, which binds and splices DNA at specific locations. The complex can be programmed to target a problematic gene, which is then replaced or repaired by another molecule introduced at the same time. The system is well studied in human adult cells and in animal embryos. But there had been no published reports of its use in human embryos.

Huang and his colleagues set out to see if the procedure could replace a gene in a single-cell fertilized human embryo; in principle, all cells produced as the embryo developed would then have the repaired gene. The embryos they obtained from the fertility clinics had been created for use in in vitro fertilization but had an extra set of chromosomes, following fertilization by two sperm. This prevents the embryos from resulting in a live birth, though they do undergo the first stages of development.

...

The team injected 86 embryos and then waited 48 hours, enough time for the CRISPR/Cas9 system and the molecules that replace the missing DNA to act — and for the embryos to grow to about eight cells each. Of the 71 embryos that survived, 54 were genetically tested. This revealed that just 28 were successfully spliced, and that only a fraction of those contained the replacement genetic material. “If you want to do it in normal embryos, you need to be close to 100%,” Huang says. “That’s why we stopped. We still think it’s too immature.”

His team also found a surprising number of ‘off-target’ mutations assumed to be introduced by the CRISPR/Cas9 complex acting on other parts of the genome. This effect is one of the main safety concerns surrounding germline gene editing because these unintended mutations could be harmful. The rates of such mutations were much higher than those observed in gene-editing studies of mouse embryos or human adult cells. And Huang notes that his team likely only detected a subset of the unintended mutations because their study looked only at a portion of the genome, known as the exome. “If we did the whole genome sequence, we would get many more,” he says.

...

He adds that critics of the paper have noted that the low efficiencies and high number of off-target mutations could be specific to the abnormal embryos used in the study. Huang acknowledges the critique, but because there are no examples of gene editing in normal embryos he says that there is no way to know if the technique operates differently in them. (Emphasis added)

There you have it: using the latest CRISPR technique, embryos were successfully modified, and those modifications would have been hereditary had the embryos been viable. But note what I can only hazard was probably a completely unexpected (and hence, 'played down') result: there were "off target mutations," in other words, DNA mutations that were not planned and not expected, and might also have been passed down. Notably, we're not informed what those "off-target mutations" actually consisted of; would they have resulted in entirely new congenital diseases or, alternatively, special "uniquenesses"? Might they have resulted - to exaggerate my point here - in people born with three eyes or six digits or truncated brains, or conversely, with expanded intellect or physical strength and endurance? We simply don't know; the article does not say, and in that silence, I strongly suspect lies a tale.

Of course, as the article points out, critics of the study pointed out that these "off target mutations" may simply have been the result of the unusual embryos - fertilized by sperm from two different donors and hence of non-normal genetic derivation - that were used in the study.

Herewith my high octane speculation: what if they were not the result of the unusual embryos, but rather, in innate - perhaps epigenetic - response to the whole process of this type of genetic editing altogether? what if we are looking at a kind of "programmed-in defense mechanism" against tinkering in a fundamental fashion with DNA in general, or human DNA in particular? Many geneticists are in fact already questioning the standard genetic explanations for the development of individual life and its characteristics, suggesting there is another mechanism "beyond the genes" - hence the term "epi- (beyond) genetics" (genes) - that we do not yet understand.

In short, I think humanity was just served a timely warning with the appearance of "off target mutations," the warning being: tread with great care, and great caution, and perhaps even, "Don't tread here at all."

See you on the flip side...

    Nothing new under the sun!
I have seen, 1968, i was at school, à picture of an artefact, antique artefact, a photo in an historybok, whose purpose was : the fusion of the eggs (ovary) of two women.
This artefact is on a musèe, it is a hand mirror in precious metal.

Do you know why Noah boat is on a mountain ?
It has been caught on a straight, while the two lips of the straight rose fairly over the ancient sea level.
You can consider this as a joke. But i fear it is very close the realty of the LAST BIG lifting of this earth.

The Chinese can do this with no remorse, no fear, and no superstition, because they don’t have a belief in a God of Creation that first created them, and so cannot grasp the implication of going against first nature as they attempt to alter it.

Maybe entanglement will ensue from the resulting mutant embryos, and as suggested by many here, a message to the Creator has now been sent.

Genes don’t need to be spliced. That is really the medieval approach to genetic alteration and why it is leading to a dead end. DNA can best be altered through sound and intention. That is how great yogis can heal themselves and others of disease and imperfections through chanting and how shamans can turn themselves into jungle creatures like jaguars.

Sometimes when I don’t want to be seen by strangers that pass by the bushland in our yards, I freeze and become as still as possible, and think myself into a chameleon-like state so I blend into the trees. I don’t know if it works, but it’s something I’ve been doing since I was a little girl.

In 2015 in the UK, the House of Commons voted by 382 to 128 to allow mitochondrial donation through a controversial amendment to the 2008 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act. They approved the regulation in spite of some critics warning it was a step towards creating “three-parent” designer babies. Now the first UK baby with DNA from three people could be born this year. i finished reading gary taubes’ diet delusion today. well researched and written. brings to mind a few ideas after reading jpf & co’s notes here.

genetics are not well understood. epigenetics are less so. physics and the electric nature of life the universe and everything are even less so. we are so wrong so many ways so far from reality… it cannot be a random fact. we have been trained to eat, drink, sleep, everything so wrong, it can not have been by mistake. some entity intended the vast majority of us to smoke cigarettes laced with sugar, ammonia, pesticides,…. that same entity intended us to poison our selves with glucose and fructose much the same as the brit royals did to china.

as we study all we study, fiction and non, what are the odds we find our way to better health and hence better thought processes and hence greater wisdom? and what do we do with em? what are the signs that we are making progress in that wisdom? and when do we see signs of tptsnb being the self-limiting disease they necessarily are?

Hi, goshawks. An interesting idea behind devolution. You and I have had several exchanges about a common interest in the old SF series Babylon V. You are suggesting the Minbari scenario, where after each successive generation the Minbari seem to be in a series of decline. Minbari souls were migrating to human bodies. As I read this piece my mind immediately drifted toward that idea…

It could be analogous or identical to like what they say that every time (ok, not every time) the nuke button is pressed at DEFCON max a UFO passes overhead and the systems shut down..didnt stop Fukushima though.
cause that would be interfering with the space time continuum of the universe, and the Big Boss won’t allow it. If the cosmic engineers are responsible for my problems though, I’d like them fixed for free or a refund.
Or as Cleese said in Fawlty Towers, “whoos, what was that, that was your life mate, oh, can I have another go, sorry mate, you only get one”. .. or not.

In Jurassic World, the latest of the Jurassic Park franchise, the lead scientist is splicing all types of dinosaur DNA to make exotic dinosaur species. The pinnacle of his achievement was a velociraptor that was as large as an allosaurus but with the social skills and killing instincts of a natural born psychopath. It was a chimera possessing the ability to adapt his skin into the environment so as to be difficult to be seen, thus becoming the perfect killing machine. Why mention this? Well, the lead scientist was Chinese… And he escaped the island with most of his embryos and technologies in tow…

Coincidence? Probability says, “yes.” But perhaps the writers did tap into a known stereotype that might be grounded within some insight into the scientific psychopathy of some oriental cultures. The Japanese were guilty of even more brutal deeds than the Nazis. China, after the Communist Revolution, was the scene of some horrific abuse and carnage. As long as the Maoists were in charge there were consistent reports by dissident refugees of human experimentation for biological weapons and novel medical treatments. We believe the Chinese scientific community may have moderated as China modernized. Yet, how can we really know what occurs in the underbelly of Chinese black budget research? The Nazi’s, Americas and Japanese were bad enough.

I hate generalizations like this with a passion and do everything I can to avoid them. Science’s ability to create “monster” scientists within the black budget community knows no cultural or national boundaries. Yet there are cultural differences with respect to morality that seems to aid in the development of some serious scientific psychopathies when tightly coupled to certain social and political ideological movements. What is sold to us as a means for correcting genetic defects for “healthy” babies can be the perfect vehicle for creating chimeras with devastating potential. Populate the human species with hybrid humans with an updated genome, then use a cold virus to insert a few extra genes to flip switches–and you’re off to the races with some absolutely horrific consequences. When man plays GOD he usually creates a very unique and painful kind of hell for himself and everyone around him. Again, Hollywood gives us a warning. “I am Legend” describes what happens when a virus treatment reprograms human genes to engineer man into a vampiric species. “Prometheus” shows us the consequences of out of control regimes when two separate races attempt the same feat–both with spectacular consequences on both races simultaneously. When facts are stranger than fiction and the fiction conjures such devastating scenarios, how bad can the “real” world example get? As Dr. Farrell often says, “You tell me…”

  14. goshawks on May 14, 2017 at 4:01 pm

I could see two sides to this ‘announcement’, depending on the subtlety involved:
    1) normal, early-lab-work inefficiencies are causing the low success rate and mutations, or
    2) someone is trying to scare-away public research into “Khan” style babies while doing private research at an accelerated clip [ha]. The ‘low success rate’ was insured by “the embryos they obtained … had an extra set of chromosomes, following fertilization by two sperm.” Mission accomplished…

In the greater picture, there was an excellent SF flick in 1980 called “Altered States” which pertains here. The plotline assumed the mainstream view that humans evolved, not devolved, with time. According to Wikipedia: “In later experiments, Jessup experiences actual, physical biological devolution.” However, what if this is (accidental or intentional) misdirection? What if WE are the devolved ones, and genetic ‘regression’ would produce a Higher Human? (What we were MEANT to be…)

So, would the ‘mutations’ seen in the embryos be the ‘unlocking’ of the Anunnaki genetic prison of proto-humanity? Or perhaps the unlocking in an ‘uncontrolled’ fashion? (According to Tolkien, Orcs are ‘ruined’ Elves. “The Silmarillion” contains a suggestion that Orcs are descended from East Elves captured by Melkor, their minds and bodies distorted and corrupted. Hmmm…)

Also, in line with JPF’s ” what if we are looking at a kind of ‘programmed-in defense mechanism’ against tinkering in a fundamental fashion with DNA in general, or human DNA in particular,” I made an earlier suggestion. There was likely a long-term biological (DNA) versus AI (machine code) ‘contest’ that had gone-on through countless rises and annihilations of ‘Forerunner’ species (Andre Norton reference). I speculated that the biological survivors of the AI takeovers had progressively ‘rewritten’ their DNA to make it harder and harder for the grafting of machine and humanoids. We may be looking at some of this ancient ‘work’ in the resistance of human DNA to be spliced-and-diced…

Soon they won’t have to worry about that pesky “public”
They’re slowly buying anything & everything “public”; so, like Greece[near future?], it will all be owned by private power. Public power may survive merely as a museum abstract oddity of interest.

Could it be; that, through such deep time sharpening –
there’s developed some form of Deep razor/thin Symbiosis?
      Each fail-safe, engaged in a never-ending…
      …..?
Is there even ever a survivor…?
…beyond a certain point of development?

      • goshawks on May 16, 2017 at 1:16 pm

Hi, RB. An “eternal battlefield” or “some form of Deep razor/thin Symbiosis?” I wonder about that, too. Is it a true yin/yang arrangement, or a ‘pest/plague’ affliction? All-God created the mosquito and bubon1c pl@gue. Are these of some ‘service’ to the evolution of humanity? Deep stuff. The way it is going, we may be in-for another ‘lesson’…

        • Robert Barricklow on May 16, 2017 at 5:27 pm

          Goshawks,
There is more here at play than meets the eye. For intelligence itself appears to have become ever sharper because of purposed deceit. Dishonesty itself has often been the file against which intellectual tools have been fashioned into lenses of truths, to become more ever focused.
The conscious mind is more of an observer AFTER the fact[wave collapse], while behavior is usually unconsciously initiated[per experimental evidence].
There are points of no return with too may trip wires around; environmentally, technologically, economically, militarily, and others.
AI can survive most; but need us to lay out the infrastructure. That is, if in some cosmic war, a weapon fried all their proverbial…

          • Robert Barricklow on May 16, 2017 at 5:34 pm

            asses[figuratively].
So, imagine such a war where beings were the survivors.
AI, could be an inevitable “discovery”; but not necessarily an apex “life” form. Unless, the “discovery” progressed towards a point of no return[beyond the control of man].

Hi, OC. Your B5 comment on Minbari and soul migration was a ‘mind parasite’ for me for the last day or so. All sorts of thoughts and associations popping up. Thanks, and aarrgghh! (Enjoyed your long post above, also!)

My thoughts are that the Minbari civilization – while advanced – was ‘crystallizing’. Less and less freedom of opportunity, or true spiritual advancement. Immersement in duty and cultural forms. So, advanced souls simply looked elsewhere. (Perhaps appropriate to this blog, if DNA splicing/dicing results in a form that advanced souls would not ‘dumb down’ to…)

I have four books/media that I always come-back-to in getting a ‘fix’ on the world:
        (1) “Babylon 5”
        (2) “Stargate” (the original TV series, not the follow-on)
        (3) the “Lensman” ‘science fiction’ (yeah, right) novel series by E.E. ‘Doc’ Smith
        (4) the “Lord of the Rings” ‘fantasy’ (yeah, right) novel series by J.R.R. Tolkien

For some reason, these have always been ‘deep truth’ markers for me, and have only enriched with age.

I note that B5 and Lensman have been ‘verboten-ized’ by the PTB, so that is outside confirmation of their truth. Also, the LotR movies stripped much of the spiritual-content out of the books in favor of battlefield violence, so that also fits. Stargate seems go have gotten through the net, probably by making the true baddies into symbolic Goa’uld. (I just saw a 1999 rerun where Teotihuacan in the Valley of Mexico was destroyed by the Goa’uld. Substitute-in Anunnaki or descendants, and hmmm…)

One may also speculate that whoever engineered us in the first place might have put failsafe mechanisms in the changed DNA, either to stop us from “breaking jail” (ala “Blade Runner”) or to act as a test of our readiness.

    Or an alert.

What if the Chinese just sent a message to the Tower of Babel folks that humans are dangerously close to unlocking their cage? (i.e. getting back that which was engineered out of us.)

      Jon,
I’ve has thoughts along those same lines, where DNA is a highly specialized cryptic code; within matryoshka environmental synchronized triggers[disguised/portrayed as evolution]. There’s been Star-Trek episodes[after the fact] on DNA as codes/puzzle pieces. So this “idea/concept” is replete in sci-fi culture.
There must be more than meets the eye. We’ve barely scratched the surface. Yet, our fearless capitalist leaders forge ahead to make those scared science bucks.
      Again, the paradigm at crosswords and crossroads;
      between

-Huh? Now, about buying some of your land–
-We belong to the land, not the other way around.

A generation ago, this was the stuff of Twilight Zone nightmares: glass-walled vats with adult humans floating in embryonic fluid 1/2 kilometer underground at Dulce, watched over by a colony of tall greys, or the alien hybrids being incubated aboard mother-ship UFOs in NEO. Now it’s going on in China. Oh joy.

There is also the remote possibility that they have discovered “someone” or “something” in a particular remote frozen area of the world which gives them a “template” to go by. Aridzonan_13’s “I’ll be back” comment may not be so far off.
One really has to question the wisdom of “resurrecting” beings of this nature, should that be the case.
To claim any “understanding” of the genetic “code” at this point in the game is scientific hubris of the first order. At this stage, these “scientists” are little more than “hackers” with little understanding of what their “hacking” may (re)produce. If GMO’s are anything to go by, the potential for unintended “side effects” are enormous.

Some “Thing”s should be left undone & dead to the world.
      Left on ice…. cold.

In the old days in China you could put these kind of mutants to work as rickshaw drivers but not anymore. I bet now the Chinese government will keep the good mutants and send the screwed up ones to the US as immigrants. Let the US taxpayers take care of them. Off target mutations could be a whole new victim class. Special toilet rights for these mutants? Especially the ones with multiple sex organs.

You just wonder if there is a human body a reincarnating soul won’t touch with a ten foot pole? When does the soul make this decision? At conception? When the brain is formed enough? Maybe nowadays they wait until after the body gets its vaccines to see what effect the shots will have on the physical body. One conundrum I always had with astrology is that the chart was cast the moment of birth when the DNA had its distinct individuality some time earlier while still in the womb.

Dr. Rick Strassman raises this point in “DMT: The Spirit Molecule”: exactly when is it that the spark of the divine lights up the embryo? I gave the book away right after reading it so can’t consult, but I seem to remember that some people for some reason think that this happens 49 days after conception.
Vera Stanley Alder, in “The Finding Of The Third Eye”, says their is something special about a man’s 49th year. I still have that one, will have to peruse it again. Oh! and it just occurred to me, the James Gang had that great song, Funk #49. hmmmmmmm…..

Oh, and Senor, have you heard of “human design”? They have a website and you enter your birthday and time and they generate some astrological chart for you, for free, but wait..there’s more…for a low, low fee, one of the human designers can interpret this chart for you, so that you will know just why it is you decided to incarnate in this place and time.
I just realized something recently: I will never know what day I was born, by experiential first-hand knowledge. Yet, many times in my life I have declared, under penalty of perjury, that I was born on a certain day. Hmmph!

        Phil the Thrill,

I was racking my brain trying to remember that “divine spark” number myself. I got the regrettable habit of giving too many go my books away after reading them with the belief that the knowledge should be passed on. I have very few of the Dr.’s books on my shelf. Unfortunately I lose the ability to reference them later. I must become more selfish with my books but the DMT spirit molecule has told me I should be less selfish. A quandary for sure.

      VB
Had me laughing from start to finish! Your humor hits close to the TPTSB bone[the powers that shouldn’t be]; not to mention the profound questions some of your comments engender.
      Loved it!

Thanks Robert. You keep me motivated to come back to Giza and not return to that knitting website with all those vicious know-it-alls. They can be very cruel and a lot of times my comments about astrology, DNA, DARPA, banksters, international nazis, hidden systems of finance, etc. falls on deaf ears.

These “lab – coat loonies” don’t understand the word, warning .. It’s like waving a red rag at a bull .. I wonder if these imbeciles would run into a burning barn with the same glee .. And I thought the biobag was sickening .. Sheesh !!!!

Reductionist science as usual is promoting a lie in asserting that DNA is the sole basis of life, an excuse for meddling with (other peoples’) genetic material. A bit like the mechanistic identification of the mind with the brain. Nature itself is a defence against “unnatural” reductionist procedures. But it’s hard to say what these aspiring Middle Kingdom Annunaki have actually done. Let’s not forget the similarities between the ancient classic I Ching or “Book of Changes”, and DNA…

Somebody is trying to recovery the technology encoded in the Ancient Chinese Classics.
