FRANCIS, FATIMA, AND THE “CONSECRATION” OF RUSSIA
Many people have written me and asked my what I think of the upcoming "consecration" of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary by Pope Francis I. I could write a lengthy diatribe about how the worship of Christ or the veneration of the Mother of God "organ by organ" as in the post-schism Roman practice is far from the Orthodox mind and piety on such matters; I could write a lengthy diatribe on how Roamin' Catholischism is just that: roaming all over the place, with no consistent doctrine other than bow-the-knee to the papacy and its fantasias about its claims, and willing to press those claims to its own schism and the abandonment of its own traditional liturgy; I could write a lengthy diatribe about how that "chair of unity" has in fact been the focus and cause of Christian disunity for the last one thousand years; I could write a lengthy diatribe about how ironically hypocritical it is for the papacy to "consecrate" Russia now, long after the fall of the Soviet Union and the return of Russia to her Orthodox roots, and this from a pope who on other points seems more Marxist than a practitioner of Roamin' Catholischism. All of this, and much more, including the papacy itself, are anathema to Orthodoxy.
But rather than write such a diatribe myself, I'll let The Saker do it, because the thoughts reflected in the article closely align with my own. One of the main points of the article is that Pope Francis' move is a power play, and it is one that is true to a long pattern of the papacy aligning itself with the imperial powers of the West, so long as those powers "submitted" by acknowledging its claims, and that, perhaps, is the ultimate goal here. (One of the main figures in western historiography in this regard is pope Leo III; however, my personal view is that Leo III is dramatically misinterpreted by the west and is in fact one of the last great Orthodox popes, but that's too long a story for here. But certainly by the time of Cardinal Humbert this "western imperial pattern" of the papacy is true.)
