ATHONITE MONKS: TIME SPEEDING UP?
When this story shared by M.B. showed up in my email inbox, I absolutely knew I'd be blogging about it. I knew because it's about a story that uniquely touches on two topics near and dear to my heart, the one being Eastern Orthodoxy, and the other being time and the odd fact that so many of us perceive that it is somehow, in some very strange fashion, "speeding up". The story, if true, concerns some alleged observations of the monks on Mount Athos. Now, Mount Athos is fairly famous and well-known if one is Eastern Orthodox, for it is the mountain in Greece that is peppered with monasteries dating back to the middle ages and the Byzantine Empire. Indeed, Mount Athos has quasi-sovereign status, and the monasteries actually govern it as a kind of "monastic republic" as an autonomous zone within Greece, directly under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Partiarchate of Constantinople.

Their daily prayers, which always took the same amount of time, now take noticeably longer.

Here my method is my usual one of assuming the story to be true for the sake of some high octane speculation. Indeed, I have extreme difficulty believing that Athonite monks would be inaccurate or deliberately misleading in their observations. While I have not been to Athos, I do have some familiarity with monastic offices and the amount of time it normally takes to pray them. In heavily liturgical churches such as the Orthodox church, one gets into a "rhythm" of prayer that is difficult to describe to someone not familiar with such traditions. But it does happen and that rhythm can often be astonishingly accurate. In addition, as the article suggests, much of Orthodox monastic tradition, including even the way candles are made, has not varied in centuries. The candles are made the same way; the services are prayed and chanted the same way.
Yet, now the 24 hour candles burn much longer than 24hours as measured by other referents, and the services also take much longer.
Here we get to my running somersaulting dive into the canyon of high octane speculation, for what this suggests is that some mechanical measuring devices - and let it be noted, all measuring devices of time are ultimately mechanical - have changed in the speed of their measuring cycles: to over-simplify it, either the candles are burning more slowly and less intensely than before, and hence burning longer than 24 hours as measured by other devices, or those the candles are burning at the same rate they always have, and the other devices are speeding up in their cycles. Either way, we appear to be in a situation where the measuring systems, which were once "synchronized", are now diverging ever more wildly, and we are on two "sets" of time. For you special relativity fans, all this should sound very familiar. So what might be happening is perhaps a kind of macro-version of Einstein's famous thought experiments in special relativity, but with one huge whopper doozie of a difference. For one thing, in Einstein, the effects of time dilation occurred in systems approaching the velocity of light. As the systems sped up, time slowed down. But notably, this appears to be happening at a threshold much lower than that with which Einstein speculated in Special Relativity. The Soviet clocks were certainly not moving anywhere near light velocity, and as for Athonite monks, being "in a hurry" is not usually a complaint made about them. One might even speculate that the "digital" world of everyday existence is speeding up so much that the two worlds - the one with the analogue flow of time as measured by candles and ritual, and the digital world of quantum states - are actually diverging and separating. And if one entertains the "multi-verse" hypothesis, divergent timelines ultimately means divergent universes.
And with that we arrive at an even more outrageous speculation: I'm smelling another unforeseen consequence of playing around with large particle accelerators whose local magnetic fields are several times stronger than the planet...

One possible explanation for the candles burning slower and longer could be due to the reduction in the oxygen content (<21%) of the air, from deforestation and pollution of the world's oceans.
I’ve noticed it too. For me it’s the night’s sleep that seems to be speeding up. I get roughly seven and a half hours sleep per night and when I wake up it seems that only a few minutes have gone by. I don’t feel refreshed. I don’t feel as the morning is the beginning of a new day but rather the continuation of the previous one. Personally, I think it’s the daily digital intake that’s changing the way my brain perceives. I certainly feel addicted to consuming information and not an hour goes by without me checking my phone for the time, the weather, news headlines etc. My work is paperless so that means staring at monitors all day. All this must be physically changing my brain, thus the way my mind perceives. After reading about the monks and their candles, I wonder whether our individually rewired brains are now functioning as collective mind that is changing reality, especially with the help of the Hadron Collider. How does one get back to analogue time? I would say by relinquishing the digital, if that’s even possible now. But would it even be enough?
The measuring devices, ok : but what about Earth own rotation speed ? If a clock speeds up and not the Earth, we should notice some discrepancies – fast – I did not notice any …

Maybe I’m missing something, but if mechanical clocks are moving in sync with this ‘faster time’, shouldn’t the combustion rate of candles also stay in sync with this faster time?

Maybe those candles are immune to the effect of the technology because the monastic environment keeps them in a bubble so to speak.

What I’ve noticed is that people seem to be moving in two different directions.
Some are embracing the digital world more than ever, with AI, cryptocurrency, cashless payments, online communities, and increasingly technology-driven lives.
Others appear to be moving in the opposite direction, focusing on regenerative farming, growing their own food, using cash more often, learning practical skills, and living a more analogue lifestyle.
It’s interesting because both groups are responding to many of the same challenges and uncertainties, yet they’re arriving at very different solutions.
I’ve heard people describe this as humanity experiencing two timelines. Whether that’s meant literally or as a metaphor, it does seem that we’re seeing a growing divergence in how people choose to live, work, connect, and make sense of the world around them.
The people who are embracing the more analogue life are rejecting the dominace of large organisations that have little connection with everyday life.
