JUST ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL: THE SAD END OF JASON ARDAY
On Monday, August 10, I blogged about the story of Cambridge don Jason Arday, who appeared to have concocted an academic career out of thin air, and a heck of a lot of plagiarism:
There has been a development - a sad one, it turns out - in this story, and I'm compelled to comment on it:
Jason Arday, the former Cambridge University professor accused of plagiarism, is found dead
According to this article, Arday was found dead in his residence, after his sudden resignation from Cambridge last week. The resignation was, by Arday's own admission, in response to the storm of controversy that had erupted about his academic claims:
When he quit, Professor Arday said it was 'with profound sadness'. He said his appointment had been 'without question, the greatest professional privilege of my life', adding: 'To become the youngest Black professor in the University's history was something I could scarcely have imagined as a child growing up with a diagnosis of autism, unable to speak until I was 11 years old.'
After days of questions from all quarters, he said: 'There comes a point when the personal cost becomes too great. I have a family. I want to be present for them. I want to reclaim some peace, some privacy and some semblance of an ordinary life. I no longer wish to feel as though I am living under a constant spotlight, where every aspect of my life is subject to public examination and judgment.
'For my own wellbeing, for my family, and for those who have stood by me throughout this difficult period, I have concluded that the only way to bring this chapter to an end is to step away.'
Professor Arday said: 'This decision should not be interpreted as a loss of faith in scholarship or in the values that first brought me to Cambridge. Nor should it be mistaken for an acceptance of the narratives that have surrounded me. It is simply the decision of someone who has reached the limits of what any person should reasonably be expected to endure.'
Amid the mounting questions over the truth, Cambridge University announced an inquiry. This week the university's vice-chancellor said she understood the concerns raised by the appointment and shared them too.
Arday, a father of two, was found dead, and currently no foul play is suspected.
But I suspect there was foul play. And I suspect there will be foul play. It is indeed sad that Mr. Arday is dead. But it is even sadder is he is dead because of the recent events surrounding his life, events brought about by a prolonged period of fraud - as I mentioned in the August 10 blog about the story. If there is anyone and anything needing investigation, it is not Mr. Arday, but the people who coddled and promoted him along through the system in the name of "diversity" or "inclusion" or whatever other virtue-signaling agenda they were pursuing, and using him to accomplish. If Mr. Arday did indeed commit all the plagiarism and fraud which has been alleged against him, then he is responsible, but the deeper criminality lies not with him, but with the people who enabled it - and him - to the extent that they did, until the whole thing collapsed. Mr. Arday appears to have given his consent to the process, and in that act, himself became an active agent and enabler in his own fantasy. At some point he had to have known that he was enabling a lie. But if all that is true, even more so did the people who agreed with it and who pushed him along (and through) the system until he was finally pushed into a position where the whole untenable fraud was exposed because it was just too obvious.
Under whatever circumstances Mr Arday died, they are sad. Two children are now without their father. They are sadder still because they were so unnecessary, had anyone in the rotting halls of quackademia had been honest with him from the outset. Years ago, when I was teaching college, I encountered my own Mr. Arday, a young black man who had signed up for my mediaeval history class. He was pleasant enough, soft-spoken, and polite. But he could only read and write(barely) at a fourth grade level. I questioned him privately, and learned that he had been an athlete. When I learned that, everything became clear: his academic performance had been completely ignored by countless coaches and teachers because he could throw a football and shoot free throws. He had been pushed through the system because he filled some need in someone else's agenda, and his own needs had been completely ignored until, at the age of 21, he had been used up and cast aside, and was now seeking a degree for which he had no preparation whatsoever.
I told him the truth, and I also told him that the system had used - and abused - him. I told him that I was going to have to withdraw him from my course under an academic withdrawal, which fortunately at the institution I was teaching at time, I could do. I told him that I was doing so because I did not want him to waste his money, and that, with the skills I had observed in class, that he would not be able to pass my class at all. I told him that he needed a lot of dedicated tutoring, and how far behind he was. To his great credit, that young man actually thanked me for being honest with him. I have not seen him, nor heard from him, since that meeting. I hope he is well. I hope he found those tutors and was able to catch up. It is a sad reminder, though, of how rotten and corrupt quackademia is, that no one did that for Mr. Arday, until all the lies had become so obvious that they could no longer be sustained.

What about the guy who called him out – Nathan Cofnas – from Ghent university?? He’s been suspended for an investigation based on racism… What’s the back story there?? The quackademia all supporting the lie? Passing the blame? Or some sort of psychological block akin to the story of The Emperor’s New Clothes?? If you tell the truth you get into trouble, if you tell lies you get promoted. It is a spiritual war in every sector, level and operation of society’s structures. Horrible.
Plagiarism, if that is the central theme and objection, which I agree is regressive for academia, is unfortunately widespread. It is now ubiquitously appearing in papers supported by AI in every university. There is another dirty little secret being that many universities, accept foreign students with difficulties in in native language English or otherwise, up to Masters level programmes. The driver is revenue and agreements in relation to student visa. In fact it is often the case that students do not attend lectures or standard tutorials which has for some years necessitated the need to institute additional supports such as the PAT (Personal Academic Tutor) to bolster the ability to undertake the programme and at least achieve a pass. Typically this is not a new staffing resource but an additional burden placed on the incumbent academic staff. Seems to me also the creation of a scapegoat role when it all goes horribly wrong for the student. Indeed the lack of attendance is tacitly accepted and supported as the excuse for non attendance is that the student lives too far away from the university and closer to their place of work. Soft trafficking anyone? The academic outcomes are less and poorer research deliverables, musical chairs within academia as academic staff try to find a university less bad than the one they work in, increasingly toxic management values and operating cultures, staff burnout and attrition due to real and often terminal illnesses. Universities need to review their strategy, funding, cost and operating structure, because in the medium term failing to do so will lead firstly to reputation of poor quality and value for money, dropping of academic standards devaluing their degree and diploma value in the market place, loss of revenue, and possibly immigration regulation audits and consequences. The quality control and competence assessment for registration onto programmes has been outsourced in many cases to agents in another country whose motivation is simply profit ,not academic excellence nor customer care. And the temptation for financially pressed universities, there few which are not, is to simply accept without too much further scrutiny. This has been obvious on the ground in academia where the lecturers and tutors will become the scapegoats for the university administrations and management. This is the system which I believe lead to the eventual passing of Jason Arday. When a system produces results that suddenly are unacceptable somehow, the first order of business to redress the problem should be to review the system and its controllers, because as any engineer will attest, any system is designed to produce certain outcomes, and the outcomes mentioned above are very much a function of the imperatives and drivers designed into that system. The worst thing academia did during the 1970s/80’s onwards was to ape the the operation of market place systema and to behave as a corporations do, whose only end goal is the profits and stakeholder dividends/ROI. There actually in the end now academic wins in this model, for the students, the staff, nor the university reputation. Perhaps for the management and administrative upper echelons but even that is a very short lived benefit.

I attended college after high school in the 1970’s without graduating with a degree or attaining a high grade point average. I went back in the late 1990’s full time for semester and received all A’s and one B. The class material was not challenging at all.
