TIDBIT: GERMANY EXPANDING ITS PANZER FORCES BY 40%

...oh, in case you missed it, and in conjunction with today's main blog, consider the following article (and note who's building the cannon on America's main battle tank):

Get Ready, Russia: Germany Is Expanding Its Tank Forces by 40 Percent

My suspicion here is that the spin of the article is for western audience consumption: I doubt very much that the German military really views alleged Russian moves referred to in the article as genuinely threatening. Nor, with the Russian Armata tank coming into operational use, will this move be viewed by Russia as particularly threatening.(Thank you to Mr. S.D. for finding and sharing this article.)

Good article, if you look-past the demonizing-Russia slant. Germany is trying to look like she’s doing something, but on the cheap. “… the Bundeswehr is expanding its tank fleet … from 225 to 320 main battle tanks … between 2019 and 2023.” If I remember correctly, Russia was moving to upgrade 5,000 Soviet-era tanks to survive in modern combat (as well as manufacturing the brand-new Armata tanks). So, the Russian reaction to Germany having 90-odd additional tanks in five years: “Hah, hah, hah, hah, hah…”

(However, the German MIC reaction is: “Oh, goodie!”)

I remember walking past a WWII German über-tank at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. (Thanks, Steve!) The Elefant (German for “elephant”) was a heavy tank destroyer (also named Ferdinand) which mounted the deadly 88mm gun and had massive frontal armor. Any tank the US or British had was dead-meat in frontal-combat with it. (Really-impressive to climb-on!) It was captured intact in Italy after the crew bailed-out. Upon examination, a small-caliber shell had wedged itself into exactly the right place to jamb the drive wheel and freeze the monster in-place. Best laid plans…
