Space... the final frontier... at least, it may be for NATO. But Joseph has some suspicions about what may be behind this latest attempt to expand NATO's remit:

It has always been about high ground . In early times, it was dropping a rock on your attacker. When the Japanese attacked Singapore at the start of WWII, they simply cruised above the range of British guns and bombed the city at will. When the Americans attacked Iraq, they simply stayed above the range of portable anti-aircraft missiles and ‘plinked’ tanks at will with precision bombs. Etc.
With the proliferation of capable, long-range/high-altitude anti-aircraft missiles, the ‘safe space’ has moved into space. Only highly-technological nations can shoot back (neglecting lasers). “Defence and deterrence” are cover words. What is wanted are offensive weapons which cannot be countered. It has always been about high ground…

The thought came when you said,”(neglecting lasers)”….so, what if one of the weather modification/metal in the atmosphere goals is to deflect/disperse a laser or laser type weapon coming from the earth? Effectively protecting the “higher ground” from any “loose cannons”….(inventor types or groups who figure out an easy way to produce enough energy for a laser, or Tesla weapon, and decide to poke out some of those “eyes in the sky”) ???

Does Rama ring a bell I only read the first book of that series by Arthur C. Clarke. As for NATO it should have been put to bed the way the Warsaw Pack was.
Let me get this straight, NATO was formed to protect Europe from attack by those sneeky Russians which will never happen, but now they want to go into space.
Eh I don’t get it, unless they want to “deploy” some sort of space weapon, which is the most likely reason. And where do you get space weapons from, OH YEAH, the military industrial complex, think of any of the recognized suspects.
