On June 22, 1941, at 3:15 in the morning just as the first sunlight rays of dawn began, Adolf Hitler launched Unternehmung Barbarossa, Operation Barbarossa, the Wehrmacht's invasion of the Soviet Union. It was Russia's turn to suffer the tender attentions of the German war machine. And suffer it did, and nowhere more acutely than in the Ukraine. Indeed, if one studies the operational history of the Eastern Front of World War Two, from 1942 to 1944, much of the major focus of that campaign was in the Ukraine, from the massive German offensive of 1942 that led to the Battle of Stalingrad and the near German conquest of the oil-rich trans-Caucasus to the Soviet counter-offensive of the winter-spring of 1943, the German counter-counter-offensive and Field Marshal von Manstein's "backhand blow", the Battle of Kursk in the summer of 1943, and the final Soviet offensive that began that year and ended with the expulsion of the Axis from most of what is now the Ukraine. It would not be an exaggeration to say that, to a certain extent, the war on the eastern front was fought, won, or lost, in the Ukraine.
And it was not the first time the region and want-to-be country had been in the cross-hairs of the German Reich. A much more stunning lesson can be had from a careful appraisal of the collapse of the Russian war effort in World War One, and the resulting Treaty of Brest-Litovsk between the Central Powers - the German, Austro-Hungarian, and Ottoman Empires - and what was now the new Soviet Government of Russia. To get out of that disastrous war, Leon Trotsky, the chief negotiator for the Soviets at Brest-Litovsk, gambled, and ceded virtually the entirety of the Ukraine to the Central Powers, who in turn set up a puppet government in Kiev, granting the country "independence" - The Hetmannate of the Ukraine it was called and so recognized in the treaties between the Central Powers and the Ukraine which brought it into existence - under the watchful eye of the German and Austrian militaries and corporations. When the Central Powers collapsed after the failure of the big German offensives on the Western Front in the spring and summer of 1918, the Hetmannate struggled through the Russian civil war, the Soviet-Polish war, the Polish invasion that reached the gates of Kiev, and the Soviet counter-offensive under Marshal Tukhachevsky that brought the Soviets in turn to the gates of Warsaw, and brought the Ukraine back under Soviet military control. (One Commissar Josef Stalin was part of that Soviet army, issuing orders on his own authority that contradicted those of Marshal Tukhachevsky, and ruining the latter's otherwise brilliant campaign, and sparing the Polish forces. That's a story I've told elsewhere.) We know what resulted from that reconquest: the collectivization of peasant farms under Stalin, the appointment of Nikita Khrushchev as his hatchet man in the Ukraine (where Khrushchev earned the nickname the Butcher of Kiev from the Ukrainians), and the mass deportation and starvation of millions as a result. Small wonder that when the Germans and Asnchlussed Austrians returned to the region in 1941, they were greeted as liberators.
My point in raising all of this complicated history (and it's far more complicated than a mere two paragraphs are able to detail) is to point out the obvious: what possible business does the USA think it has there, and how can it possibly make things any worse?
Well, too late, because according to this article shared by W.G., the old Central Powers' agenda is once again rearing its head. Am I surprised? Not at all:

After all this war, the Ukraine will simply have to have help rebuilding itself, and Germany is there with lots of money and its own version of the Marshal Plan (call it the Generalfeldmarschal Plan). Under the Generalfeldmarschal Plan the Ukraine can be rebuilt with lots of private investment:
Many worldwide have been waiting for the other foot to fall on the conflict in Ukraine. Finally, good old Germans are the ones to plop down the telling jackboot. Making money off the blood-soaked ground of Europe’s most corrupt and (now) pitiful country is what it’s all about. Germany now proposes to open the gate for private investment funds to make debtors out of a crippled nation. And the Russians are the bad guys?
The headline from Euractive reads, “Germany pitches international private investment fund to boost Ukraine recovery.” According to the news, the Germans are lobbying EU partners to set up a private fund to “help” Ukraine back on its feet once hostilities cease. German Development Minister Svenja Schulze told reporters, “Public money won’t be enough; we will also need private investors.” So, the gifts will now be stopped, and the pirates will be set loose on what’s left of Ukraine after America and its allies are done shipping worn-out weapons systems (in need of expensive new replacements) to Kyiv.
The German move is part of a bigger plan dubbed Wiederaufbau der Ukraine (Reconstruction of Ukraine). It includes the possible use of seized Russian billions as guarantees/resources to help private funds flow, as if owning the richest farmland on the planet and a whole culture is not an incentive for George Soros types.
The World Bank estimates Ukraine will need $486 billion to “fix” the country. The philanthropic, all-caring Germans have gone so far as to organize conferences to pitch private investors to join the feeding frenzy (excuse me, reconstruction effort). At the URC in London in the Summer of 2023, some $60 billion was raised. This sum was in addition to the UK’s and the World Bank’s £240 million in bilateral assistance. The list of organizations, shareholders, and businesses set to involve themselves in this is hidden by organizations like the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD), the International Finance Corporation, the US International Development Finance Corporation (USDFC), and British Investment International.
And how is all this to be accomplished? Note the following (and remember how this model was applied by Germany after the crack-up of the Warsaw Pact:
And get this: Germany’s KfW Development Bank will develop a model for rebuilding Ukraine. For those unfamiliar, the KfW Development Bank was created to rebuild what the Allies bombed into nothingness in WW2. Today, KfW is the world’s largest national development bank, owned by the German government.
We can look for billions invested by subsidiary KfW IPEX-Bank, which loans for ports, airports, toll roads, bridges and tunnels, railways, ships, planes, telecommunications, energy, and manufacturing. Finally, who could forget KfW “accidentally” wiring €320 million ($426 million) to Lehman Bros. when everyone scrambled to get their money? Don’t be surprised if Zelensky accidentally receives a deed to a chalet in Berchtesgaden. (Emphasis added)
In other words, the German development bank will end up owning the crucial Ukrainian postwar infrastructure, because they will help rebuild it.
We just need the war to last a little longer, to help destroy more of that infrastructure, so the Germans can rebuild it (a big Danke schoen shout out to US House Speaker Mike Johnson).
The losers in this whole sorry and blood-soaked episode are the Ukrainians. Imagine how much better things might have been if they had pursued a course of neutrality vis-a-vis Russia and Europe. Perhaps there is still time for that approach, but I doubt it. Now it is a scramble to see who will be in charge of the rebuilding of that country.
Something tells me it will not, ultimately, be the KfW Development Bank.
